Overview

The Medical Director, Institute of Health Equity (AIHE) is under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer. The work of the Institute is to study the wide array of health and social problems disproportionately impacting racial and ethnic groups in clinical outcomes. This role will develop vision and strategies for the AIHE. Key in providing guidance to improve targeted interventions and modifications to health care systems that will promote health equity for the communities served by AltaMed. Includes creating an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture to foster and encourage innovation in applied health services research and implementation. Responsible for the overall monitoring of the Institute's budgetary matters, including the Institute's general operational fund, and any categorical, auxiliary or grant funding. Responsible to seek and maximize state funding and other alternative revenue streams wherever possible to support assigned programs and services within the institute, and accountable for the sustainability and profitability of the Institute's programs and services.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Recommend and design new programs to meet AltaMed’s needs with respect to health care disparities.
  2. Promote and facilitate leading-edge research, particularly in applied health care science, including collaborative and community particiapatory research, in areas related to the goals of AIHE
  3. Build, and provide sufficient support for a community of innovative researchers to enhance research capacity at AltaMed and to increase research opportunities for AltaMed providers.
  4. Develop networks between AIHE and researchers in the field in the public and private sectors, locally and nationally.
  5. Act as the nexus between AIHE and the community with respect to research initiatives of mutual benefit.
  6. Develop strong linkages with appropriate academic universities and other research institutions.
  7. Lead the Institute’s strategic planning and ensure that the Institute’s objectives are aligned with AltaMed’s Strategic Plan.
  8. Ensure that health equity is an organizational priority for AltaMed, both in resource allocation, and as an indicator that AltaMed is committed to achieving health equity.
  9. Establish a steering committee for health equity work that is integrated with AltaMed senior leadership to ensure an adequate level of resources are allocated to support the Institute’s work.
  10. Develop and manage a research plan effectively and efficiently.
  11. Ensure that accepted standards of research integrity and ethical standards are met and maintained.
  12. Enhance the reputation of AIHE and AltaMed Health Services by undertaking quality research and communicating that research to the society, resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  13. Assist as needed/requested in Grants team efforts to obtain grant funding for research projects, particularly in the area of research design
  14. Provide Grants team with linkages to potential principal investigators for potential projects.

 

Qualifications

  1. Certified Medical License coupled with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a health clinic setting and/or a community health center setting working with the underserved populations.
  2. Demonstrated experience as a visionary leader having fostered innovation and community engagement within a social justice framework.
  3. Experience with promoting leading edge research, in applied healthcare science, including collaborative and community participatory research.
