    This position leads, manages, and supervises Site Medical Directors in an assigned region or specialty care area(s), as well as provides comprehensive, coordinated, primary and preventive health care services to a diverse & underserved patient population across their lifespan. In performing this work, the Regional Medical Director ensures execution of assuring access to high quality, affordable and caring health care for all. Ideally, this position would spend 50% of their time on administrative duties and 50% of their time on clinical duties. The Regional Medical Director actively participates in the various committees and meetings where Medical Leadership input is necessary and provides direct supervision of the assigned Medical Directors.


    Managerial Skills:

    1. Recruit, select and supervise the providers; assist in the recruitment and selection of the site’s second line of management.
    2. Conducts orientation for new medical staff members covering AltaMed’s philosophy, medical protocols and process management.
    3. Participates in setting staffing levels and training initiatives in area(s) of responsibility.
    4. Supervise all medical services offered by the programs.
    5. Handle grievances and incident reports on a local level. Involving HR and escalating to next level of management as appropriate.
    6. Sits on Corporate Leadership Committee, representing Sites to address medical policy issues for assignees area(s).
    7. Ensure that all committees are effectively accomplishing goals established in the QM/UM Program, and all activities are clearly documented.
    8. Actively participates with other Regional Medical Directors and their Committees and welcomes others to participate in his/her facility(ies) committees.
    9. Meet with Medical Directors and other providers as needed on quality issues at least monthly.
    10. Leads or participates on assigned committees & initiatives (e.g., Kaizan events), chairing committees as required.
    11. Coordinates with Dental Directors and cross refers dental patients.
    12. Promotes clear lines of communication between Medical Operations and the other staff members in all area(s) of responsibility.
    13. Disseminates and interprets outcomes information for the clinicians, and uses that information to improve quality of care within the area(s) of responsibility that is consistent with national standards.

    Financial/Budgetary Skills:

    1. Coordinate financial budget with AVP Operations to develop and analyze facility(ies) performance, set goals (financial, quality, etc) for the provider team and monitor and hold them accountable.
    2. Oversees the management of participant’s medical situations, and oversees the site’s use of medical specialists and inpatient care. Focuses on the financial objectives of market/company.
    3. Evaluates the capital equipment and staff needs of each area(s) of responsibility; making recommendations to the appropriate management personnel.
    4. Participates in all area(s) of responsibility to bring new business to the centers.
    5. Provides statistical analysis of each area(s) performance.
    6. Recommends potential growth opportunities for new or existing services within the market.
    7. Reviews expenses to insure costs are appropriately controlled and other financial indicators such as pharmacy utilization, referrals, etc are providing appropriate amounts of revenue.

    Quality/Patient Care Responsibilities:

    1. Proven understanding of quality improvement initiatives and collaboratives.
    2. Implement AltaMed standard quality processes and initiatives.
    3. Assures personal compliance with licensing, certification and accrediting bodies.
    4. Participates with other RMD’s to provide consistent medical practice in an area.
    5. Evaluates and treats patients in accordance with AltaMed’s standard of care.
    6. Sets level of medical care and quality for patients and monitors care using available data and chart reviews.
    7. Implements policy and protocol defined by Chief Medical Officer throughout area(s) of responsibility.
    8. Meets with CMO, other RMD and Site Medical Directors about quality of care, policy, procedure and records issues and to implement best practice medical and process management protocols.

    General Responsibilities

    1. Identify and adopt new technologies to enhance both the patient experience and the overall smooth operation of the areas f responsibility.
    2. Perform all other related duties as assigned or determined to be required to lead the assigned functions.


    1. Board Certified or Board eligible physician, Primary Care specialities preferred.
    2. California License to practice medicine, and unrestricted DEA License.
    3. Minimum of eight years experience managing multiple outpatient health clinic settings. Experience in a community health center setting working with underserved populations preferred.
    4. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing quality improvement programs.
    5. Experience with managed care, administration of programs, and staff supervision, including staff at satellite clinics.
    6. Demonstrated experience with Electronic Medical Records.
    7. Experience developing and leading medical quality improvement programs, preferably in a managed care setting.
    8. Previous experience with computer based systems required; Electronic Medical records experience preferred.
